
Janet M. Sorensen,

Janet M. Sorensen has served as the Acting Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) since February 2025.
As Acting Inspector General (IG), Mrs. Sorensen is the senior official responsible for audits, investigations, and other oversight activities relating to USDA’s programs and operations. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) provides leadership in promoting economy and effectiveness in USDA programs and preventing fraud, waste, and abuse. Mrs. Sorensen’s priorities as Acting IG have been to focus OIG’s resources on the protection of public health and safety related to USDA’s mission and operations, and to improve the management and financial integrity of the Department’s programs.
As Assistant Inspector General for Audit since April 2023, Mrs. Sorensen was responsible for all OIG Audits, inspections and evaluations of USDA and its worldwide operations and programs, and for the management of staff of approximately 185 auditors, information technology specialists, and administrative support personnel.
Mrs. Sorensen formerly served as Deputy Assistant Inspector General for Audit and Audit Director at the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General. Her responsibilities included overseeing audits and evaluations of the Postal Service’s human capital management, delivery operations, sales, marketing, international operations, and revenue generation.
Mrs. Sorensen started her career at the USDA OIG in 1993 in the Office of Audit and held a variety of positions with increasing levels of responsibility. Mrs. Sorensen proudly hails from Streator, Illinois, where she grew up in a farming family and participated in her local 4-H club for many years. She is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting. She and her husband have two adult children.
